eXtension Money Tips for Tough Times

MoneyTipsLogo.jpg

If you are 18 or older, you are invited to register (until 9/14/08) for the drawing of the MP3 Player shown at the Champlain Valley Fair (CVF) University of Vermont Exhibit featuring Money Tips for Tough Times.

http://is-nri.com/take?i=136827&h=AnZC4FXpWQyhHChLHSDN6A

When you finish the survey, you will be invited to click into the registration form for the drawing for an iPod. Leaving the survey page site insures your confidential contact information will not be connected to your answers and your survey responses will be anonymous.

If you are younger than 18, teach a parent or another willing adult how to click into the Survey. Of course, teach someone who will give you the iPod if their entry wins!

Before completing the registration form, you may wish to explore the eXtension web pages. Go to http://www.extension.org and click on any of the resources in the list in the right column. For example, if you are interested in horses, cows, youth science, gardening, etc. you will find these categories and more. Click and explore as many as you wish.

The following are examples of the questions in the Instant Survey at

Was the Fair exhibit the first time you heard about eXtension resources on the Internet?

____Yes
____No

Of the following money tips featured at the Champlain Valley Fair Exhibit, you will be asked to check (a) every one that you are now using, (b) every one that you plan to use, (c) every one you will need more information to be able to use.

_____ Make a list of what you earn: Household earnings include net (after-tax) income, benefit payments (e.g., Social Security, unemployment, disability), child support or alimony, public assistance, self employment income, interest on savings and investments, and other income sources.
_____Using spending records as a guide, list fixed expenses such as housing, car loan payments, and insurance premiums.
_____Next, list flexible expenses such as food, transportation, and gifts.
_____Make a list of periodic expenses and divide the annual cost by 12 to arrive at a monthly cost. For example, $4,000 of annual property taxes costs $333 monthly. Be sure to set aside money for financial goals as a monthly “expense.”
_____If you lack an emergency fund of at least three months’ expenses, include a “line item” in your spending plan to gradually build up your cash reserves.
_____If you have access to “automated” savings plans, such as a 401(k), sign up today. Even a small amount of savings (e.g., $20 per paycheck) will grow substantially over time.
_____ Spending plans should balance the “bottom line.” In other words income should equal expenses, including savings. Work on one of three ways (a. increase income, b. reduce expenses, or c. do a little of both) to get monthly cash flow so that household expenses (including savings) are less than or equal to income. Expect to make several attempts to get the numbers to balance out. This is perfectly normal.
